Scan Disk
Scandisk for Windows 95/98/NT
Make sure you have no other programs or windows open and turn off your screensaver: Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Display. Click
the Screensaver tab, and in the drop-down list underneath "ScreenSaver" (click
the down arrow to get it), select None (at the very top). Click OK to finish,
and then close the Control Panel window.
Click on Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools ->
Scandisk.
When the Scandisk Program opens, put a check mark in the little square
at the bottom to automatically fix errors. Then start the program & go find
something else to do for a while. Scandisk can take a long time to run, so don't
do this if you have something else you want to do on your computer right away. If you are using Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98SE or Windows ME, you need to
run Scandisk once a month.
Scandisk for Windows 2000 & Windows XP

There is not really a scandisk
for these systems, instead there is Check Disk or Chkdisk. You can start ChkDsk
by opening the My Computer icon, right-clicking on the hard drive icon,
selecting Properties, selecting the Tools (tab), and then clicking the Check Now
button. When you open ChkDsk, select Automatically fix file system errors and
Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. After you click Yes to
schedule the disk check, ChkDsk will be performed the next
time you restart your computer. Restart your computer.
